The Department of Psychiatry at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Medicine is seeking a full time psychiatrist to serve as the Medical Director of UNC WakeBrook. The assigned duties will be at the WakeBrook campus in Raleigh, NC. UNC Health Care at WakeBrook consists of a Crisis and Assessment Clinic operating at all times, a 28 bed acute inpatient unit and two residential units consisting of a 16 bed non-hospital medical detoxification unit and a 16 bed facility based crisis unit, and a novel primary care clinic designed to serve only patients with a serious mental illness and staffed by faculty from the UNC Department of Family Medicine. In addition, the UNC Department of Psychiatry has an outpatient youth training clinic on the campus one ½ day per week and the Horizon's program also uses the campus.
Responsibilities include: 1)Clinical Care (50%): The expectation for this position is that the Medical Director will be able to devote about 50% of a full time FTE to providing direct clinical care. At WakeBrook this may take the form of providing coverage to all units when a faculty member is out on vacation. About 8-9 psychiatrists/NP's provide coverage during the day at WakeBrook. In addition, the Medical Director will provide second opinions for difficult cases on an ongoing basis throughout the campus. The Medical Director will also be part of the required call rotation and will provide weekend coverage at WakeBrook at the same frequency as other psychiatrists. The Medical Director also may choose to seek off campus part time clinical activities as part of this time.
2)Community representation (10%): The WakeBrook medical director will be expected to represent the campus in multiple settings and to a variety of Wake County constituents. There are regularly scheduled stakeholder and community meetings. Stakeholders include local hospitals, outpatient behavioral health providers, NAMI, Alliance Behavioral Health, The Division of Mental Health, The Recovery Community including the Healing Transitions program, Wake EMS, etc. In addition, the Medical Director may be asked to meet with county commissioners and/or other elected officials, to provide tours of the campus and explain the services that are provided.
3)Supervision of faculty (15%): The medical director is expected to meet with faculty on a regular basis and provide support and career guidance, especially for junior faculty. This may take the form of clinical supervision, joint activities in scholarly pursuits, or other mutually agreed upon activities. This is designed to provide both early career support and an opportunity to make sure junior faculty have the opportunity to move into future leadership positions. In addition, the medical director will be an active participant in any personnel matters that may occur with UNC School of Medicine faculty.
4)Involvement in Leadership (10%): The Medical Director will work with the UNC Health Care lead administrator and UNC Department of Psychiatry leadership to review ongoing clinical activities and make recommendations for possible improvements/changes. In addition, this position will provide recommendations on budgetary management. The expectation is that the Medical Director is available and can be reached at all times if there are urgent clinical matters that cannot wait until the next business day. The Medical Director will also meet with UNC Health care WakeBrook leadership as needed to communicate clinical initiatives and provide guidance as indicated.
5)Scholarship activities/QI/Program development (15%): The Medical Director is expected to be a clinical leader and help to push the knowledge base in the provision of clinical care. This may take the form of novel initiatives in program development, encouraging outside clinicians/researchers to be involved in the care at WakeBrook, collaborations with outside agencies, obtaining grants, and/or publishing papers that are generated from the work done at WakeBrook. The expectation is that the work should then be presented to both the Wake County community and at state wide meetings which would highlight the activities occurring at WakeBrook.
Education and Experience:
Qualified candidates must have senior administrative experience leading both physician, non-physician clinicians and support staff and leadership experience working with multiple stakeholders in healthcare delivery. S/he must also have broad clinical experience, business management experience, experience working across and integrating multiple healthcare disciplines and experience in policy development. Preference will be given to candidates with experience working in an academic healthcare setting and concrete evidence of innovative healthcare delivery.
